Growing up in the Depression era gave a unique perspective and opportunity to Ed Hoy. His mother was fortunate to have work at a glass sign shop. They made signs for beer companies as well as other businesses. Young Ed would produce Christmas ornaments from the shards and broken remnants of signs. This experience would later become his avocation.

After a full career in the photographic business, Ed retired and opened a small gift shop in Naperville. In addition to giftware and clocks, Ed offered some stained glass supplies and finished products. The building depicted was restored and added to in quick succession. The stained glass and supply business took off and Ed (having good business sense) decided to concentrate 100% on this segment. The store served as a model for new businesses by offering classes and freely providing business advice to a growing group of loyal customers. To better serve those customers, Ed Hoy's became wholesale-only in 1983 and endeavored to provide leadership for the industry and his customers who now came from throughout the Midwest.
